Varna is the third biggest city in Bulgaria. It is an administrative, economic and cultural centre of Varna region. Varna is an international sea resort and a port. There is also an international airport . Long sandy stripes with a width of 50 metres connect the city with the sea. The climate is temperately continental and strongly influenced by the Black sea. The winter is comperatively damp and mild and snowfalls are insignificant. The spring is windy, the summer – hot and the autumn – warm and long.
Varna was founded in the VI-th century B.C. Then it was an ancient Greek colony called Odesos. Materials dating as far back as the middle and late neolith to the Bronze Age were found in the city and its surroundings. Roman excavations from the II-nd century, a Roman bath, an early christian basilica and remains of houses and churches were discovered there. An early Bulgarian protective rampart – Asparuh’s rampart – was found within the confines of the city.
The Sea Garden has an unique architecture. The library “P.P.Slaveikov” is the oldest cultural institution in the city.It is established in 1883. The opera-philharmonic society, the Dramatic theatre “Stoyan Buchvarov”, the Puppet theatre, the Art Gallery, the Archeological museum, many radio stations, cable televisions and other cultural institutions , as well as The Palace of Culture and Sport and the Festival and Congress Centre represent the cultural life in Varna. One of the biggest tourist attractions – the Dolphinarium which is situated in the Sea Garden - was found in 1984. It is the only one of its kind both because of its attractions and its unique architecture.
The international sea resorts Golden Sands and St Constantine which are situated at a short distance north from Varna contribute to the development of the city as a sea resort.
